Electronic laboratory notebooks
The group’s mission is to put forward recommendations for the choice of electronic laboratory notebooks.
A laboratory notebook is a log used to list daily activities related to research projects and the experiments and protocols used. Users can list the dates results were achieved and identify contributions to projects. Such notebooks also facilitate quality procedures, enable the traceability of the scientific process and contribute to the reproducibility of data and research results. All these factors make them a strategic tool for open science.
The working group aims to help scientific teams make choices according to their specific needs from the different electronic laboratory notebook solutions which are currently available.
- To establish a shared vision of the definition, framing and scope of the "digital laboratory notebook".
- To produce a set of recommendations on the process of choosing a tool according to professional requirements, disciplines, research fields and institutional constraints.
- To produce a set of recommendations on interoperability between different tools.
- To draw up a comparative and non-exhaustive list of tools according to the recommended criteria. This list could be used as an example for the implementation of a selection study.
Tovo Rabemanantsoa works in the digital cluster for science and co-pilots the cross-disciplinary project for a web portal for computing, storage and the cloud (PCSC).
He also manages the information system at the ISPA (Atmosphere Plant Soil Interactions) joint research unit (INRAE-BSA) in Bordeaux where he is in charge of quality and leads the IT team.
As a member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), he is a member of the Software Source Code Identification WG and the FAIR 4 Research Software WG, which promotes the FAIR approach in the context of scientific software.
Dominique Pigeon works in the field of Scientific Computing. He was trained as a researcher in biochemistry and spent eight years working “on the lab bench” before switching to computers. He successively managed Unix systems and network infrastructures for the public health sector as a project manager, process pilot leader and head of the application maintenance department. More recently, he coordinated IT solutions for the death registration service before taking over the management of rolling out electronic laboratory notebooks for the Inserm at the beginning of 2020.
Gilles Mathieu is head of the Scientific Computing section in the Solutions and Development for Digital Uses Department.
He is involved in several digital infrastructure projects at the institutional (Inserm’s scientific computing services), national (through the GIS France Grilles) and international (the European EOSC-Pillar project) levels.
